Over the last few decades, global warming has intensified at an alarming rate.
Average temperatures are rising, heatwaves are multiplying, and their effects are being felt around the world. But it's the cities in particular that are suffering from these upheavals. With their concentration of buildings, lack of green space and population, these areas are becoming veritable «heat islands». To combat this, With this in mind, we urgently need to introduce new solutions, favouring more sustainable materials.
Eco-pavement, a project to combat global warming in an urban environment
This is where our eco-pavement developed and patented by ESITC Caen's joint laboratory. It was chosen as the material for the refurbishment of Place Foch in Wimereux .
This paving stone, made from shellfish by-products, naturally filters water. This paving stone also has the ability to restore coolness to the ground in very hot conditions. So, for car parks, cycle paths, waste treatment areas, etc., an area made of shell paving stones would make it possible to artificially create islands of coolness, so disparate on the scale of a conurbation like Paris.
What's more, the water filtered by the’eco-pavement This drainage system will feed an infiltration basin. This water can be recovered and pre-treated at 80%.
Recycling, a key area of research at ESITC Caen
Indeed, this is not the first time that the recycling of materials and co-products has been carried out at ESITC Caen. The research laboratory carries out numerous research projects linked to the construction and public works sector and the recycling of materials, such as the project SB&WRC.
