The sustainable construction are at the heart of environmental issues, This means that future professionals will need to develop their skills. It is therefore crucial to integrate innovative teaching approaches to raise awareness and provide training in emerging’eco-building and energy performance.

Raising awareness of eco-construction through play

Eco-construction implies a change in design methods and choice of materials. The RE2020 environmental regulation, which replaces RT2012, sets ambitious targets for sustainable, low-carbon construction. It is based on three main principles:

  • Use of bio-sourced and low-carbon materials
  • Improving the energy performance of buildings thanks to the principles of bioclimatism
  • Consideration of summer comfort and climate resilience buildings

a Game Lab to learn how to build differently

The project GALAADD (GAme LAb for Learning about Sustainable Development) is part of this approach, combining educational innovation and raising awareness of sustainable construction. Its aim is to train students in the building and public works sector through edutainment, by integrating immersive and interactive digital tools.

The GALAADD project is based on two major challenges:

  1. Educational innovation setting up an immersive learning environment with tools for virtual reality, mixed reality and gamification. These interactive tools help students to develop their skills and gain a better understanding of environmental issues.
  2. Acquiring key eco-construction skills based on the RE2020, GALAADD aims to teach :
    • Improving the energy performance buildings
    • The reduced carbon footprint through the use of sustainable materials
    • Adapting to new climate requirements and occupant comfort

In brief, the content of the project

  • Creation of a Game Lab at BUILDERS École d'ingénieurs Normandie. - A methodological guide, based on the feedback from the creation of the BUILDERS École d'ingénieurs Game Lab, will be drawn up, listing good practice and the pitfalls to be avoided when setting up this type of experimental laboratory in a training organisation.
  • A virtual reality serious game on low-carbon concrete
  • A mixed reality escape game on notions of comfort
  • A low-tech board game on the urban resilience to climate change

The GALAADD project is not limited to BUILDERS École d'Ingénieurs Normandie. It is due to be rolled out nationwide via the CCCA-BTP, allowing apprentice training organisations (ATOs) to access these resources and integrate them into their curricula.
